i usually try to do one big vacation a year and this year it was puerto rico. well actually i only started my one big vacation a year motto last year but hopefully it'll keep continuing. at least until i'm married and settled down anyways which appears to be a good five years away so i've got time.
in an effort to not bore my many faithful readers (heavy sarcasm here in case you need a little help) i will refrain from blogging about my day to day activities and instead do a top ten list ala david letterman. my top ten moments or memories good or bad in puerto rico in no particular order.
1. living in a different hotel each night we were there except for the last two nights wherein we were able to live the life in a one bedroom suite complete with its own pull-out bed. i know someone was happy. lesson to be learned here is to perhaps buy the frommer's guide book before booking the hotel to figure out the best location but everything worked out even if we were calling hotels until the wee hours of the morning on our first night of arrival.
2. swimming in the bioluminescent bay at vieques.
3. planning for a night of clubbing at club laser...a hot spot according to once again the frommer's book only to arrive at midnite to no more than ten people in the entire club. employees included. needless to say we booked it out of there and ended up going to a club right across the street from our hotel. quite a waste of a taxi trip.
4. sunbathing our first day at the gay beach wherein sanford refused to take his shirt off. we saw lots of speedos including a pink and white striped one and lots of muscles but hey enid and i weren't complaining.
5. chartering our own airplane seating a total of four passengers to fly to vieques (another island) and having the pilot have the instruction book open while he prepared for take-off. images of aaliyah flashed in my mind.
6. visiting el morro during the daytime and at night and all the while getting eaten alive by mosquitos while admiring the view on the grass.
7. iced coffee. you really can't believe how good it is.
8. flamenco beach at culebra. supposedly one of the top five beaches in the world. it's certainly the best beach i've ever been to and for a couple of hours there we had the entire beach to ourselves. that's what happens when you show up at 8am sharp.
9. meeting two pilots in two days. one who offered for us to visit him at his house and to pick us up at 5:30 in the morning to take us to the airport to catch our flight and another who ended up hanging out with us our last two nights there and taking us to dinner and showing us around san juan. you just can't beat good old hospitality these days.
10. and the most important. my mission of relaxing on the beach and drinking pina coladas was accomplished and i came home with a tan without burning as i did last year after cancun. thanks to my compadres who reminded me time and time again to reapply after swimming or after prolonged stay in the sun.
and oh to make people even more jealous, while i was in training in orlando the week before i left for puerto rico, there was a modeling search held in the same hotel we were staying at. yes you heard me correctly. modeling search. as in lots of young pubescent girls walking around in tight short little outfits with their eager moms trailing at their side hoping they'll be discovered and become the next gisele. hong missed out.
